This policy explains what happens to personal information when you use jonbaldie.com.
The site is run by me, Jonathan Baldie. For personal information I choose to process, I am the data controller. You can contact me at jon@jonbaldie.com.
Information collected when you visit
This is mostly a static website. You do not need an account to read it.
The hosting service may still record ordinary server logs, including your IP address, browser, referring page, pages requested, and the date and time of a request. These logs are used to keep the site secure, reliable, and working properly. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in operating and protecting the site.
Comments provided by Disqus
Blog comments are provided by Disqus. Its software appears on blog posts, and its comment-count software appears on the blog index. When either loads, Disqus may collect information such as your IP address, browser and device details, pages visited, activity, identifiers, and information you give it when commenting. A comment, username, profile, and anything else you deliberately post may be public.
Disqus may use cookies and similar technology, including for advertising and personalisation. Its own processing is governed by the Disqus Privacy Policy and cookie information. You can also change your Disqus data-sharing settings.
I use Disqus so readers can discuss posts and so I can moderate that discussion. My legal basis for that limited processing is my legitimate interest in running the comments section. Please do not put sensitive personal information in a public comment.
Mailing list
If you join my mailing list, I collect your email address and any list tags sent with the signup form. I use these to send the book updates and material described on the signup page. The legal basis is your consent. You can unsubscribe through the link in any email, or ask me to remove you.
The mailing list is handled by Mailcoach, operated by Spatie in Belgium. Its handling of this information is described in the Mailcoach Privacy Policy. I keep your subscription information until you unsubscribe or ask for deletion, although a minimal suppression record may be kept to make sure you are not added again by mistake.
Contacting me
If you email me, I receive your email address and anything you include in your message. I use it to reply and deal with your request. The legal basis will usually be my legitimate interest in handling correspondence, or taking steps you ask for before entering a contract. I keep correspondence only for as long as it remains useful or is needed for legal or business records.
Embedded content and external links
Some pages contain images, audio, social-media content, or other files delivered by third parties, including Transistor, X, image delivery services, and Amazon infrastructure. Loading this content can disclose your IP address, browser details, referring page, and request time to its provider. Those providers may use cookies or other technology under their own privacy policies.

Cookies
This site does not use analytics or advertising pixels. Disqus and other embedded services may use cookies and similar technology when they load. You can control cookies through your browser, although blocking them may stop comments or embedded content working. Disqus also explains its support for browser privacy signals in its data-sharing guidance linked above.
Sharing and international transfers
I do not sell your personal information. It may be handled by service providers needed to run the site, principally Fly.io for hosting, Disqus for comments, and Mailcoach for the mailing list. Embedded-content providers receive the technical information needed to serve their content.
Some providers process information outside the UK. Where data protection law requires safeguards for an international transfer, the provider or I will use an approved safeguard or another lawful basis for that transfer. Each provider gives further details in its own privacy information.
Retention and security
Hosting logs are retained according to the host's operational and security needs. Public comments remain with Disqus until removed under its rules or deleted by the commenter. Other retention periods are described in the relevant sections above.
I take reasonable steps to protect information, but no website or email system can promise absolute security.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law may give you rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, or receive a copy of your personal information, and to object to its use. Where processing is based on consent, you can withdraw that consent at any time without affecting earlier processing.
Email jon@jonbaldie.com to exercise a right or raise a concern. I may need to confirm your identity first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
Children
This site is not designed to collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted personal information, please contact me so I can deal with it.
Changes to this policy
I may update this policy when the site or its services change. The date at the top will show the latest revision.
